Frankie helped Annie down from the tree and he had already retrieved all of her brass. He stowed her rifle while she jumped into the passenger seat of the Jeep.

He slid behind the wheel, cranked up the engine and headed back to the hotel six miles away.

“You did a nice job.”

“Thanks. Rob did too. You didn’t get to see it, but he was fast and efficient.”

“Yep, that’s Rob. He don’t mess around making it look pretty.”

Fairfield Inn. Marion. Illinois.

While Frankie drove back to the hotel, Annie called Austin and spoke to Chet Kamps. He confirmed Angola was on the verge of rioting—according to his sources in Louisiana.

When Frankie and Annie met up with Jack and Rob in the hotel lobby, Annie passed that information along to Jack.

“Okay. Your source believes this information is accurate?”

“He does,” said Annie. “He’s afraid we’ll be too late.”

“I hope that doesn’t prove to be true,” said Jack. “I’ll book us a flight to Baton Rouge Airport. That should be about as close as we can get to Francisville. While we’re waiting to leave for the airport, I suggest we all get some rest.”

“When you get the departure time, Jack,” said Annie, “let us know how long we have.”

“I’ll do that.”

They stepped off the elevator in the upstairs hallway, Jack in the lead heading for his room to make the required phone calls.

Annie’s room was a little farther along the corridor. Rob and Frankie’s room was next to Jack’s.

As she passed Rob and Frankie, Annie winked at Rob and mouthed a silent message.

He stared at her and didn’t acknowledge he’d seen her say the words. She was surprised when there was a knock on her door a few minutes later.

Annie opened the door and smiled at his serious face. “Come in. We haven’t got much free time until we have to leave again. I need a shower. How about you?”

Rob nodded.
